Hi again,
I have a 1912 Model 14 in 25 Remington. Jim did some work on it a few years ago when I first bought it and got it in top shape for me. It is a great shooter and has been a top notch first rifle for my son. He was 11 years old when I bought it. When I got it the stock had been seriously modified so I felt no remorse in cutting it down to a shorter LOP and making it slimmer for him. Now he is 15 and I am interested in replacing the stock with a new repro. Does anyone have any first hand experience with any of the stock makers out there? I read a lot of bad stuff on line about Macon gun stocks. Anybody have any personal dealings with them?
Repro Stocks for Model 14
Re: Repro Stocks for Model 14
Carl!
Essentially the "Macon" semi-inletted blanks are better than nothing at all but if you talk to any really good stock man, they would tell you less work is required to make one from scratch. You like messing with wood so maybe you wouldn't mind but I'm sure I can sell you something that would fit for $85 and be original..............it probably has a professional repair on it but almost all the originals have a crack at the wrist.
You would have to give me the serial of your rifle so I can test the stock for fit with a trigger guard in the same serial range .......... all triggerguards are not quite the same and the stocks were inletted different for hook/lever safety than were the earlier ones.
Price would depend on if you need a buttplate and screws as well, the bloody screws are more difficult to find that the buttplates which are becoming quite rare.

Re: Repro Stocks for Model 14
Hey Jim,
Great to hear from you. As you know, this little 14 is pretty nice but not original. Has been re-blued, a studded magazine tube ring added (by you) and the receiver swapped out at some point. My vision for this gun is to keep tinkering with it until it is like-new beautiful. I don't mind doing the woodwork on a new stock. An original used stock would have to be perfect for me to consider. Otherwise I'd prefer a new one. I really want a tang sight
for it too.
Are there other stock makers that you (or anyone else) has experience with? A google search of Macon Gun Stocks turned up so many horror stories that I am very hesitant to take a chance with them.
