The best solution I've seen is sold at Dixie Gun Works which is re-loadable cases which accept a 22 blank, just have to make sure you line them up right.

The mainspring is a a very tight V when installed and not wide open when it's not, it pushes up on a stirrup for the hammer. There's no cover there you can see the spring (open) in the front of the grip face. I suspect you are referring to the stirrup then but to know if you even have the right spring we would need a picture. Replacing (fabricating) a stirrup is a lot easier then making the spring so count your blessings there. Finding one short of purchasing a parts gun is going to be tough it would be a bit painful but making one with a right size chunk of metal and a file would be possible. I'd probably heat it and toss it in oil as well when done.
Another warning they a BEAR to put back together without making a tool your probably end up using a channel lock or something and those springs are ground the wrong way they apparently didn't understand metallurgy that well back then and they break easy.

That's my 2 cents as always people are welcome to correct me or tell me I'm full of it
