Barrel finish

Post by dieNusse1 »

Quick question. Were barrels rust blued throughout SxS production including lifter models or were some of the earlier models browned? I have a lead on a '78 or '79 which I understand needs some serious TLC. Reason I'm asking is that I'm using Oscar Gaddys' blueing technique. Worked great when I refinished a FN 16 ga. which started out as a lump of rust. I'm now refinishing a '89 twist barrel. A '94 and 1900 are next. So far process is working great but it's a lot of work.

BTW - I grew up about a mile from Dr. Gaddy - too bad I didn't know about his work and make contact with him.

The steel barrels were blued - the damascus barrels were a black and white. I've had Brad Bachelder redo a number of Remington doubles for me - he's quite knowledgeable about color case hardening and doing damascus. Mine have always came back the bk/white, not brown. Paul
