Just a FYI, If you clean or polish with anything more then elbow juice, oil, and a rag you will completely destroy it's value.

Based on the serial number, your revolver is a New Model Army revolver. The "Army" - "Navy" designation doesn't refer to a branch of the service, but rather the caliber of revolver. The "Army" is a .44 cal with an 8" barrel, while the "Navy" is a .36 cal with a 7-1/2" barrel. Your revolver was manufactured in the October 1864 time frame and you are correct that the cartouche "OWA" is from O. W, Ainsworth. A Principal Sub-Inspector for the Ordnance Department.
