Aussie Pig Hunter needs help.

Post by bendyball »

I recently bought a 7600 Police in .308 which I will be using to hunt pigs this September in Cape York. The Cape is in far north Queensland and has some of the best pig hunting in the world. Mobs of as many as 700 pigs have been sighted in the past. There has been a good season this year and we are expecting good hunting. It will take us three and a half days driving to get there and our camp is very remote being about two hours drive to the nearest telephone (no mobiles this far out) and about six hours to the nearest town.

My new rifle should be ideal. I have added a 10 round Eagle magazine and a Tasco red dot. Most shots will be less than 50 yards and many will be less than 10. We are also hoping to get onto some scrub bulls and brumbies.

Now for the question (I know you were holding your breath!). I am not happy with the factory magazine release which is too small especially for use in the sticky tropics at the Top End. Where can I get a better magazine latch?

Many thanks, Ben.

I'd think the only way to fix this, would be to have a decent gunsmith weld an extension on the release, then clean it up and blue it. A good welder might be able to do the same thing, but not blue it. Some sort of insta-blue or paint might take care of that problem. I'm sure no one makes a longer release. BUT, you might call Brownells and ask them. Also, might want to check http://www.gunpartscorp.com (I think it is) as they carry parts for every gun known (almost).

Hey, you guys need any help shooting those hogs? Been wanting to come to Australia, and that would be as good a reason as any. What bullet weight you going to use?

Thanks ghost. I had heard that Ramline used to supply a quick release magazine latch with their 10 round magazine and I was hoping someone might know if this would be a simple solution rather than a gun smith.

Thanks for the offer but I probably won't need any help with the those boars. We are planning to make a DVD though. Watch out for it on ebay later in the year.

I will be using PMC 180 grain PSP. Last trip I used my Timberwolf 44 magnum pump action with 240 grain pills. Good medicine on pigs but I decided to upgrade to a .308 after I was charged and nearly run down by a wounded scrub bull.

See you in the bush.
