FYI, i believe mine has screw in rear sights as they do not look like any sort of dovetail. the fronts are dovetail of course. please explain this barrel hump so i can determine if my gun is a transition gun, or would you kow from the info given?

Woolly
If still original, your 4203xx 270 is a Transition type. Has screw mounted rear barrel sight with no hump and dovetail. 22" barrel. Great gun.

Hey guys I am new here and have need some Identity help.

I have found a 721 chambered in 264 win mag for sale. I want to believe it is original but I have my doubts. I discovered this site looking for dating material. On the proper part of the barrel there is a "41" stamped then a little farther up there is a "G"

Now I have not handled this rifle but G measn 1960 but it also means 1986 the year big green chambered the classic in 264
I am also told the barrel measures 24"

The reason I am so intrigued by this is Dad has an HH and a 270 he also used to have the 30.06 and always talks about how he sold his 06 then 3 months later found a 264 ( of course this was before I found out there was a 280) So seeing that the 06 is pretty easy to comeby I wanted to get him this 264 but if its not original then I dont want it.

Sounds like it could be original. They did make a 721 264 24" stainless barrel (blackened color). Screw on rear barrel sight. If it says 721 on the receiver and 264 on the barrel, you should be good to go. See the first page post here to note the serial number range you should find on it.

I put my eagle eye on and caught the slightest glimpse of the top of an H that is covered by the stock which is aftermarket and there is a C before that april of 61!

Going to get it on monday!

Now I just need to find that elusive 280

721 264 WIN 4449xx O H

24" barrel

To those who have seen these are those with blued stainless barrels stamped stainless steel? Because this one I have the barrel is darker than the metal of the action and appears to be very silver where it has worn around teh stamp of the caliber etc.

Thanks. I see the serial number is outside on the front receiver ring. I have posted it in our list by the serial number.

Is the rear receiver ring tapped on top for a scope base?

I'll take a look today and get pix... I know it had a scope on it for many years, so the front was tapped...not sure if the rear was already or not. I was curious on s/n's....I see another 722/300S with a lower serial number (30,xxx) but a later production date (4/48)....compared to mine. I was curious how that works. I'd get it if it was a different caliber, but the same confuses me a bit! :?

I have a 722 in .222 that was made in 1955 by the serial#. It is factory engraved but has the wood that is on a hunter model. Does anybody know if this came this way ? Do you think the wood was changed? Where could I find some fancy wood with checkering(seen picture of engraved 722 with checked wood but was made in 1960. :D
