Need info, Rem 700 7mm mag, / Blued Stainless ???

Post by alazys »

Hi all, I have recently come into the possesion of a Remington model 700 chambered in 7mm magnum. The barrel is blued but it is stamped with the words "stainless steel".

I am looking for more info on this rifle and its approximate value. The blueing is at about 90% and the wood is at 95%. The stock has very nice grain to it, checkered, factory Rem recoil pad, and open sights. The serial number is 76730.

I've heard that Remington did blue some of it's earlier stainless barrels, but is this truth or myth. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I can find no info on this rifle on the web.

Thanks, alazys :D

I also have one of these rifles. Remington did make "blued" stainless steel barreled 700's (The action is regular steel). I don't think it's conventional bluing though, as stainless won't take regular bluing. I have an idea that it is some kind of paint because I have seen a lot of them at gun shows that are all chipped up. Not worn, chipped. The Blue Book of Gun Values says to add 15% to the rifle's value with a stainless steel barrel. It also says they were manufactured from 1962 to 1970. I've tried to figure out what year mine was made but I'm confused by the date codes on it (which are located on the left side of the rifle just ahead of the action on the barrel). Mine says: U D S 79 Maybe someone else can clarify this for me and if you post your codes we may figure out what year they were both made. In order to give an approximate value (which I can't help you with because my book is to old) you need to tell which 700 you have. Is it an ADL (blind mag and fully wood stock) or a BDL (dump mag and "ebony" (read plastic) fore-end tip).

Hope this helps,
Dave

I believe that your date code is DS, which is Sept 1969.
