Hello,
I'm a new member, and my 721 info is as follows:

S/N-21166 (Inside receiver rail) .30'06 W SS (8/47) There's a letter 'U' with a bar across the top stamped to the right of the year code. What is this symbol?
It has Lyman Alaskan 7/8" rings with a Norman-Ford "The Texan" scope w/super-fine crosshairs. I think it's a 4X.
The stock has strange looking sling studs--there's a small flange on the wood side, and they're round and flat on the bottom without a milled flat over the hole for the swivel. On the front stud there's a small pin protruding to the rear, but this pin isn't on the rear stud. Factory studs, maybe?
My grandfater told me he bought this rifle during WWII when "you couldn't buy a gun 'cause they were all going to the war." But, that doesn't really fit with the barrel date code. I guess he could've missed it a couple of years.
He said he never shot it, and it's in excellent condition. I shot it maybe 6 rounds in the late '70's-early '80.

I have a Model 721 in 30-06 that I bought used in 1975. On the left side of the barrel is a small B and F, and a larger 122. The serial number on the left side of the receiver is 8132, which doesn't look like any I've seen on this site. There is also a faint 81 on the bolt.
Comments or information would be appreciated.
Thanks

I have a 721 remington rifle in 270 win. The serial no. is 420205. It has a checkered stock and a metal remington butplate. How do you no if its a bdl model. I have owned this gun since 1978 and have shot many deer with it. The letters on the gun barrel are RF 12. A frend of mine has a 725 in 243, I told him to hang on to it. After looking it up myself it was made 11/1958 but I still dont no what the 12 stands for. The gun has factory checkering I think. I saw a 1953 advertisement for a 721b model looks the same.

I inherited two725's
7125xx PF with a +1 stamp as well. .222 I don’t believe the stock is original as it has a large radius bed but all the attributes of a BDL stock. It also has a K10 – 60C mounted. Nice looking rifle.
7004xx .280 - Not currently in my possession
On a 3x5 card found in Lacy’s book, pg78, were writen down the above rifles and the following:
7153xx 1959-61 270
71542xx 1959-1961 30-06
35 Whelan - no additional information. I have not seen a 35 Whelen rifle in the inheritance package but do have rounds. Clearly if this was a 725, it would have been modified.
Lacy’s sums for 1958, 1959, 1960, 1961 are in error and should be 6,365, 4,017, 3308, 2780, respectively.

Hi there. I stumbled upon this site while trying to determine the age of a couple 721's I have. I decided set up an account because assuming I am reading the stamping on one of my Remingtons correctly, I may have the oldest on the list. Let me start with a little back story. I have several rifles, including a few custom built guns, all of which are on Remington actions. I've been talking with a gun smith friend of mine about building a 6.5-284 and was planning on using the action from one of my 721s. I have two 721 30-06. One was my fathers and the other was my grandfathers (both of whom are no longer with us). I had assumed my grandfathers gun was the older of the two and it is in pretty rough condition. I started googling how to determine the year of each gun and was a little confused when my fathers gun (which is in immaculate condition) kept coming back with 1947. Reading that Remington 721s were only produced between 48-62 I figured I was doing something wrong. Then I noticed my grandfathers gun had a serial number on the outside of the action but there was no serial number on my fathers gun. That lead to more digging (which is where I found this page). I guess I am looking for confirmation that I am deciphering these codes and stamps correctly.

Left side of barrel in front of action has a little scroll type mark followed by W S S and the same scroll mark.
As stated, no serial number on outside of action, but inside the action (where the lug travels) is a 5 digit serial # 209XX

(I notice some people do not list the entire serial number. why is that?)

Thanks for any input you can provide.

JB
Thanks for the oldest for our list so far (3/2011)
The incomplete serial number is mostly for privacy.
Some believe ill mannered persons might use a complete serial for fraud or something.
I would say to keep the older one intact and convert the newer rifle. 6.5-284 is an excellent cartridge.
