Cap and Ball pistol New Model 1858E
Cap and Ball pistol New Model 1858E
I have recently inherited a cap and ball pistol and am trying to find more information on it. On the barrell it reads Patent Date Sept 14, 1858E Remington & Sons Ilion New York USA New Model. There is a capital B stamped on the left hand side of the trigger assembly and the #29264 stamped into the underside interior grip. I was told it was issued to the United States Army and since it came through my ancestors I believe it was probably issued to a Pennsylvania unit. Any information or information telling me where to go to find out more about it would be appreciated.

If your revolver is an Army model, 8" barrel, .44 caliber, S/N 29264 would have been part of the deliveries made by Remington during July of 1863 against the contract dated July 6, 1863.
If your revolver is a Navy model, 7-1/2" barrel, .36 caliber, S/N 29264 would have been part of the deliveries made by Remington during August of 1864 against the contract dated November 21, 1863.
If your revolver passed final inspection by the military receiving inspector and is still all orginal, the left grip, and sometimes both grips will bear the inspectors cartouche (stamped initials) indicating acceptance.
Unfortunately, we do not have information to identify where Remington firearms were sent after the government received them.
Hope this helps,

These markings are normally "in process inspectors marks".
