New to this subject. I have always like the looks of the Model 8 and Model 81. The Model 8 is a much sleeker rifle, but I understand it is a bit more fragile. I found what I think is a C Grade Model 8 at a local shop (rounded pistol grip). Just how prone are these things to breaking? Other than the beefier stock and forend, what is different about the Model 81? I want one in .35 Rem. and I see more 81s than 8s out there.
Looking at one Model 8 that is missing a screw in rear of receiver. What does that screw do? Pic attached. Thanks!

The missing screw is a filler screw. That hole is to attach a tang (peep) sight.
A rounded pistol grip does not make a model 8 a C grade. The fabcy wood and checkering wood.
The rounded pistol grip on a model 8 is an option, though. It is less common than the straight grip. to tell if the wood is an upgrade, remove the forend and see if there is a 3 or "C" stamped in the wood. That would be the only sign. Most likely just an "A" grade with optional stock.
The Model 81 isn't much different than the 8, just different style stocks, basically.
