788 Manufacturing Dates
The arms collectors website only covers manufacturing dates thru 1972. The 788 was manufactured/assembled from 1966 thru 1983. The manufacturing date code for the 788 will appear as a 2 digit alpha code on the left side of the barrel (when looking from the butt end) approximately 1 inch forward of the recoil lug. The left-most character is the month of manufacture and is as follows:
B L A C K P O W D E R X
B is for January and X is for December. Other months are in letter order as listed above.
The year code is the right-most character and will be as follows:
1966-N; 1967-P; 1968-R; 1969-S; 1970-T; 1971-U; 1972-W; 1973-X; 1974-Y; 1975-Z; 1976-I; 1977-O; 1978-Q; 1979-V; 1980-A; 1981-B; 1982-C; 1983-D
When a 788 was returned to the factory for repair the number 3 was senciled into the barrel immediately left of the original date code. When the repair was completed a new date code was added to the left of the 3 signifying the date of the repair. This procedure was repeated each time the rifle was repaired.

Keep adding-on
New update. .44 carbine was added along with a .243 rifle and this last week-end I picked up a 7mm-08 carbine made in 1983!!
6mm's and .308's are still common around here, but the trick will be to find a .30-30 that doesn't cost more than 2 body parts!!
