I don't shoot an 11, but I have used plenty of doubles. Kent Impact Tungsten Matrix is my favorite, and you can use Bismuth, Hevi-Shot Classic Doubles, and I think the new Remington HD is also okay, but check.
What could have happened... did.

Model 11s are pretty heavy guns and can take a lot. Back in the mid-1950s when the 2 3/4 inch Magnums came along, Arthur Kovalosky in North Hollywood, California, offered a heavier recoil spring for the Model 11 and Sportsman to better handle the recoil of the short magnums. Arthur also had a bit of a cottage business converting Model 11 12-gauge guns to handle 3-inch magnum shells. The little I've used my Sportsman where non-toxic shells are a requirement, I've used Bismuth shells.
