Hi there. I am looking at a model 700 from the late 1960's-early 1970's for a long range rifle project and am after a little information on the action material. it is a 7mm rem mag is that makes any difference.
I have been told that there is a possibility that it has a stainless barrel, even though it looks blued.
I am lead to believe that they 'hard chromed' or 'blued' the stainless barrel because no one wanted the 'silver' finish, but the action remained blued carbon steel.
What I need to know is whether the action is blued carbon steel or stainless?
cheers
Sam
Model 700 Stainless Barrel, blued action
Re: Model 700 Stainless Barrel, blued action
Barrels to from 1963 to 1970 are stainless and should be marked as so. They are plated with, I believe, copper and something else that will take a bluing procedure. Actions remain your carbon steel.
Re: Model 700 Stainless Barrel, blued action
it should be marked "STAINLESS STEEL" under the chambering stamp. I've had three of these...all 7mm Rem Mags...
note, all of these had barrels of 23-1/2"..not 24". I still have one barrel in the corner.
