Remington !! barrel chamber length

Post by Doveman1985 »

I acquired a 16 gauge Remington model 11 barrel. It has "RB" for the date code so it was made in 1933 but no indication of chamber length. I was wondering if any 16 gauge barrels of this time period for Model 11's had a 2 9/16 inch length chamber. I did some comparison measurements with a known 2 3/4 inch and both seem to be the same. I'm pretty sure the unmarked barrel is a 2 3/4 inch but does anyone know if Remington used the shorter lengths at any time. I know Browning barrel did. Thanks

The Remington Model 11/The Sportsman, introduced in 16-gauge in 1931, were made for 2 3/4 inch shells from the get go. While Remington's 16-gauge Nitro Express load was put up in the up to that time "standard" 2 9/16 inch shell, 3 drams equiv. 1 1/8 ounce --

with these new 16-gauge autoloaders they introduced the slightly hotter 16-gauge Auto-Express load in a 2 3/4 inch shell, 3 1/4 drams equiv. 1 1/8 ounce --

The SAAMI meeting where it was suggested that manufacturers mark the chamber length on their shotguns was in 1937. We begin seeing such markings on Remington pumps, autoloaders, over under and their Parker doubles by late 1939 or early 1940.
