Model 17 shotgun barrels

Post by Doveman1985 »

I have a 1922 (barrel date code) model 17 from my late grandfather. It's cyl. choked with the same serial number as the receiver. I recently bought a full choke barrel made in Oct, 1926. It fit but was a little snug. My first question; can barrels be swapped on this gun without any modifications. I know Winchester model 12's have a spacing issue that can be an issue in proper fit. Second, this barrel does not have a serial number nor does it have 'Model 17' on the barrel. It does have the correct 'Remington UMC' markings and Browning patent dates on the barrel. Can anyone enlighten me on Remington's markings for this gun/barrel during it's production? Did at some point Remington stop adding serial numbers to this particular barrel? Why is there no 'Model 17' on the barrel? Did extra barrels exist for purchase and were they not marked? Thanks
