Matching barrels on Pre-11 Auto Trap Grade?

Post by psparks60 »

I have a 1907 four digit trap grade Remington Autoloading Shotgun. It has two barrels, with barrel stamps both matching the receiver SN 9239. Seems correct. However, the roll markings on the two barrels is not the same, and one barrel (w/ patents listed) has a date code "SS" which looks like 1947. The other barrel has no date code.

Is this possible, or is it maybe someone faking the serial on the later barrel?

I have attached photos of the roll stamps on the barrels and receiver, and the serial marks on the barrels.

The receiver and the original barrel are marked Remington Arms Co. That was the company name until 1911, when Marcellus Hartley Dodge combined his arms and ammunition companies as Remington Arms - Union Metallic Cartridge Co. During 1916 they incorporated to raise capital for war production becoming The Remington Arms Union Metallic Cartridge Co., Inc. In 1920, in order to spin off excess capacity and debt a new company was formed, Remington Arms Co., Inc. and later that year The Remington Arms Union Metallic Cartridge Co., Inc. was dissolved. The extra barrel of 1947 vintage is correctly marked for that time frame.

Is the SS date code followed by a 3 that would indicate a factory repair?

Thank you for the feedback. And, yes, how did you know it had a 3? Here is a picture. Looks like "L SS 3"

So, that suggests that the gun was sent back to the factory for the second barrel?

3 is factory repair. So, should have been fitted at the factory. As I understand it if it was a 2 that would be an extra barrel fitted by an authorized gunsmith.

LSS 3 L = February SS = 1947

Researcher is correct.

I have 4-digit serial numbered receiver that was a replacement by the factory and has the "Remington" and circle "UMC" on the tangs.
