The Remington Arms Union Metallic Cartridge Co. Inc.

Post by Model17 »

I have recently received a Model 17 20 gauge shotgun and was trying to determine approximate age. There is no code on the barrel. The serial # 27885 is on the left side of barrel and left side of receiver under Model 17. The top of the barrel has Model 17 The Remington Arms Union Metallic Cartridge Co. Inc. Remington Ilion Works Ilion N.Y. USA Browning's patent June 15 1915. There are two barrels with the same markings, but different lengths and bores. Does anyone have a clue.

The Model 17 was introduced in Remington Catalog No. 51, the first catalog issued by Remington Arms Co., Inc. which was formed in 1920. The Model 17 is not in Catalog No. 50, the last catalog issued by The Remington Arms Union Metallic Cartridge Co., Inc. The folks at Ilion must have already made a lot of Model 17 barrels before Remington Arms Co., Inc. was formed and The Remington Arms Union Metallic Cartridge Co., Inc. was dissolved. Or, they didn't rush into getting a new roll=stamp for the barrels. I've recorded The Remington Arms Union Metallic Cartridge Co., Inc. marked barrels on Model 17s well into the 28xxx serial number range --

On the Model 10, by 1921 they were being marked like this --

Unfortunately the first page of Model 17 production from the old between the wars factory ledger isn't included on this web site. Page 2 begins with January 19, 1926, at serial number 35639.

Unfortunately I haven't been able to accumulate enough good pictures of barrel markings to really know much. How about everyone with a Model 17, posting a picture of their barrel markings and telling us the serial number of the gun.

The barrel markings on my Model 17 #54443 are identical to those on AZMike's gun.
