Model 31L 20 gauge with TC wood?

Post by Jakeismydog2 »

I have perused the Remington society for research in the past and found lots of great info here. This time though I haven't found anything and need some help.
I have a few model 31s. I really like 31L's to hunt with. I have never seen a "L" with anything other than the corncob forend and the uncheckered stock. I have also never came across a 20 gauge with a "Deluxe" stock unless it was a high grade engraved model. So that leads me to the very odd gun I just purchased. It's a 20 gauge. It has what I would call a TC stock. It's deluxe with checkering and it has a thicker comb and very little drop. The stock has the Remington grip cap. The barrel is a 28" vent rib with a full choke. If that was it, my question would be, did Remington make a 20 gauge 31TC? Which I would still like to know... However mine is more odd than that. As it has the alloy receiver. It is simply marked as a 31 not a 31L however that is a common thing on alloys.

So what do I have? Is it someones pieced together oddity? Was it a bizarre special order? What do you think?

Not related to your question, but here goes. I have a 31L 20 gauge. It has a crack in the bottom front of the receiver in front of the loading port. I'm told that that failure was somewhat common. Have you seen it often?

That is not the Model 31 TC grip or slide handle checkering pattern. Its after market wood, I suspect from Bishop, as it is one of their grip checkering patterns. Remington never offered a vent rib on the 16- or 20-gauge Model 31s, only plain barrels, matted top surface or raised solid ribs. Yet on the Model 11 and "Sportsman" autoloaders they offered vent ribs on all three gauges and barrel lengths. A few Remington Arms Co., Inc. catalogs offered the Model 31 Skeet Gun and the 31 TC with the Aeromet receiver.

I have seen the Model 31L cracks like you describe, but my 12- and 20-gauges don't have it.

It might have been up-graded as a light weight trap gun. Light weight often translates "kicks like a mule".
Very nice looking 31!
