Remington 11-48 F Engraving

Post by Foxnut »

All,
I am trying to gather some info for my Father. He has an 11-48 20 Ga. that is engraved in the F pattern. Is there a way to determine if this is Factory/Custom Shop engraving? Thanks for any help/info!

Some good pictures would go a long way towards verification, but a hands on examination by a Remington engraving expert would be the best.

I’ll post some pics tomorrow or Sunday. Is there a way to tell if a gun went through the custom shop from the SN. Is there research letters that you can pay to purchase? Thnx

If the serial no. is engraved rather than stamped, it's a good indication it's custom shop, but
that isn't exact. As researcher said photos would help.

ChuckD, the serial # is stamped on the bottom of receiver instead of engraved. I spoke to a couple of folks in Tulsa that said they have custom shop guns with stamped and engraved serial #’s. That is one of my questions. I’ll post pics in several days. Back to reality of the work thing!! Thnx

Excellent photographs. The RSA Research Team has been researching the Remington Archives in Ilion. The slanted "E" is Master Engraver Carl Ennis's signature. He retired from Remington July 31, 1978.

There are a few records of Carl's early work. Several india ink engraving "pulls" on oil cloth are in a private collection. Sportsman 48F's serial number 3834385 was done 12/1953 and serial number 3834386 done on 1/1954.

Bob Runge, also a Remington Master Engraver, kept detailed records of his work. His Log Books are in a private collection. Sportsman 48F serial number 3834384 was done by him 10/16/1953.

It is interesting that the serial number on Sportsman 48F, sn 3834385, was stamped as most Remington Custom Shop engraved firearms had hand engraved serial numbers. Guess one can never say never about Remington Firearms.

Gene,
First let me apologize for the delayed response. Secondly a hearty thank you for the research and information you provided! One of the reasons I was curious as to whether this was factory engraved or not was due to the stamped SN and not an engraved one. Thanks for clarifying that as well. Really appreciate the additional information regarding the two additional guns and when they were completed and by either Mr. Ennis and Mr. Runge. Great to have this information! Brett

I have also found a 11–48 That has a stamped serial number I believe it was made in 1954.
