Remington 700 DOM

Post by Yellowhouse »

I recently bought what I think is a Mountain Rifle. Walnut, checkered, slim 22 in barrel, and hinged floor plate. Left side of barrel is B then a 59 and serial range is C6336xxx. Bluebook says this is 2004. Is it a Mountain Rifle for sure.

I'll leave it to the experts so I don't have to take my foot out of my mouth but a "C" starting serial number I'm fairly sure ISN'T 2004. Of the top of my head the A's were the second half of the 80's and the letters changed every 5 years ....

You need to do a little deductive reasoning and some reading.
The following links will give you some clues. But, you need to scrutinize the barrel date code to make sure you've got it correct. The "B" could be the month of January and if that "5" is actually, an "S", that would put the year as "1998", which would also be correct for the Mountain Rifle years of manufacture.
As far as the letter prefix to the serial number, the "A" prefix was in the latter 1970s, the "B" prefix was in the early 1980s and the "C" prefix started in the latter 1980s. (see one of the links and quote I'm listing) But, I already knew this as I have Model 700s from the late 70s, and 80s and their barrel date codes correspond with them.

"700 receivers with ser# 1000-387347 started in 1962 until 11-68. 6200000-=6899999 started in 11-68 until Aug of 1975. A6200000-A6899999 started Aug 1975 until about Jan 1980. B numbers were from 1-1980 to 11-87. C numbers started from 11-1987. This is as far as my John Lacy book covers."

It's also not uncommon to have a receiver and barrel date code that are somewhat out of sync. I have one such 700 in 7mm Express Rem which has an earlier receiver ("A" prefix - mid 1970s) than when that cartridge was issued in those rifles and the corresponding date code on the barrel (Jan 1980).

Edit to add: Rereading the quote I listed above, I noticed another anomaly with my 7mm Express. The quote suggests that the A series started with A6200000, but the serial number on MY 7mm is A32017XX.
Now, THAT is a head scratcher........

Good luck.
