manufacture date of model 11

Post by r baker »

I have inherited my grandfathers 12 gauge model 11 and am wondering when it was manufactured. There is very little stamped on the metal, only the serial #57494, the name of Remington co and Browning pat. numbers and the word full for the choke type. It appears to be just a basic civilian model with no frills or engraving. Any help you can give would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance. RB

Remington Autoloading Gun

Remington Arms Co. introduced their 12-gauge, five-shot, John M. Browning designed, "Remington Autoloading Gun" in 1905. Serial number 57494 would have been from 1908.

The company name was changed to Remington Arms - Union Metallic Cartridge Co. in 1911. Shortly after that Rem-UMC began calling that gun the Model No. 11.

In 1916 in order to finance war production expansion the company incorporated and became Remington Arms - Union Metallic Cartridge Co., Inc. on January 14, 1916.

After the Great War the company found itself over expanded and in trouble so needed a reorganization. On May 20, 1920, the board elected to dissolve Remington Arms - Union Metallic Cartridge Co., Inc. and on May 24, 1920, a new company was incorporated, Remington Arms Co., Inc. Remington Arms - Union Metallic Cartridge Co., Inc. was officially dissolved on August 11, 1920. Circa 1927/8 they changed the safety from the lever inside the trigger guard to a crossbolt behind the trigger. In 1930, they introduced the 20-gauge Model 11. Model 11 20-gauge serial numbers began at 1,000,000. In 1931, they added the 16-gauge to the line with 16-gauge serial numbers starting at 1,500,000. In 1930, they also introduced a three-shot version in 20-gauge called "The Sportsman."

The 20-gauge “The Sportsman” had serial numbers beginning low S1? Maybe S1000? They added 12- and 16-gauge "The Sportsman" in 1931, with 12-gauge "The Sportsman" having serial numbers starting at S500,000 and 16-gauges having serial numbers starting at S200,000. "The Sportsman" had a three-bird roll-stamping on each side of the receiver.

In 1934 DuPont acquired controlling interest of Remington Arms Co., Inc. In 1937, Remington reduced the roll-stamping on "The Sportsman" to one bird on each side and started putting the roll-stamping on Model 11 receivers as well. At the same time, the name "The Sportsman" or "Model 11" began being stamped on the bolt.

(system won't allow me this sixth picture)

On Sep. 28, 1937, they stopped the separate serial number sequence in the 2xx,xxx range for the 16-gauge "The Sportsman"; on Aug. 24, 1937, they stopped the separate serial number sequence in the 5xx,xxx range for the 12-gauges and finally on Feb. 14, 1938, they ended the separate serial numbers for the 20-gauge “The Sportsman” at 16,753. From then on the "Model 11" and "The Sportsman" were serial numbered together, continuing the Model 11 sequences. Combined 12-gauge "Model 11" and "The Sportsman" serial numbers reached 499,999 on August 1, 1943. Serial numbers were then jumped to 700,000 and continued.

Thanks so much for the information. Judging from the pictures it looks like my shotgun is a #2 special grade with the checkering.

Would a Browning Model 11 Shotgun, 12 gauge, serial number 749730 have been manufactured n 1943?

Thanks.

There is no Browning Model 11. It is either a Browning Auto 5 manufactured by Remington during the war, or a Remington Model 11.
What could have happened... did.

No. The combined 12-gauge Model 11 and "Sportsman" serial numbers reached 499999 in August 1943 and they then jumped to 700000 and continued. The old "between the wars" factory ledger ends for 12-gauge Model 11 and "Sportsman" on September 1, 1944, at serial number 716840. Serial number 749730 would have been a post-WW-II gun.

The Browning A5s made by Remington had their own serial number sequence, prefaced with an A for 16-gauge, B for 12-gauge and C for 20-gauge.

I'd appreciate it if the researcher could decode the date for my Model 11, too. Pretty much the identical description
that R Baker gave for his gun, except the serial is #21291 stamped forward of the magazine feed and is stamped underneath the barrel as well. Also at the base of the barrel is an engraved sort of stylized "P" with a punch mark underneath, or if viewed inverted it looks like "a6" sharing the same spine, with the punch mark centered above.
Thanx, in advance!

Your Model 11 was made in 1906.
Then it isn't a Model 11, it is a Remington Autoloading Shotgun.

Oh s.. I don't want to disagree with researcher, he's always right....
The list I have has the Model 11 starting in 1905 with about 8,000 made that year.

The serial numbers matched on all the parts when the gun left Ilion. What happened when government arsenals served hundreds of guns at a time getting ready for surplus sales after WW-II is disheartening. I have a flaming bomb 1934 version Model 31 pump where the serial number on the receiver, barrel and trigger group are all different and it has a 1941 version butt stock screwed on it!!

Back in the day I know Ithaca Gun Co. ran ads in The American Rifleman and probably other magazines too, warning about headspace problems in these mismatched surplus Model 37s of theirs being sold.
