Manufacture date of 870 12 ga

Post by 3DogDaddy »

I recently purchased a used 870 12 ga with a 26” barrel. The only barrel markings are the traditional Remington Arms Company Ilions, NY on the right and ***(star) 12 GA. 2 3/4” and 3”*** (top line) 3 1/2” only with Super Mag receiver (bottom line) on the left, I do not see a barrel code anywhere. There is an F stamped into the bottom of the barrel close to the receiver. The left side of the receiver closest to the barrel says Remington 870. Nothing else. The left side of the receiver closest to the stock has the serial number. The serial number on the receiver is CC92294C. It does not have smooth polished steel on the receiver. It is the more textured metal. It has a non-metallic trigger guard. It has solid walnut stock and fore-end. All of the parts are marked with Remington name or logo. Can anyone help me with a date of manufacture and particular model 870 (Remington lists 81 different ones) this is. It’s a great gun. I’m just trying to find out if I have a 5 year old gun or a 25 year old gun.

I do not know how old it is, but it is NOT 25 years old. Back then they were still using the old reasonably sensible system of serial numbering. No barrel date means nothing. I have several like that going back to the 1960s.

Thank you for your response. Does anyone know when they started using polymer trigger guards? That might help narrow it down some. Remington basically told me when that division of Remington Corp was purchased, not all of the history (serial numbers to dates, etc) came with the purchase. Sounds crazy. They at least gave me this link. I’m hoping I can get lucky and someone has one similar that they actually know the history of. It looks like an Express except that the stock and fore-end are a rich solid walnut. Like I say, very pleased with the gun, but would like to know if I got a great deal, paid market value, or overpaid. I paid $449 used and I felt that was a fair price and I guess that’s the main thing.

Thank you for this. If I read it correctly, mine is probably an Express from 1997-2000.

Where do you see a 'CC' prefix listed ? I don't.

Maybe I’m wrong, but from the choices the last post provided, that was my guess. My serial number is CC92294C. The best I can tell, this starts with a C. I am a novice at this. If there is more than one letter at the beginning, do these need to be combined for accuracy (CC) and not just a C? If so, I don’t have a CC to pick from so I’m back where I started.

Prefix means as in before the numbers. So CC is the prefix. It is not in the chart because Remington scrapped the old numbering/lettering system, and no one has figured out any rhyme or reason to what they went to that has any value. The suffix on everything for a while was RS, which was said to indicate Remington Shotgun. And that is why I cannot help beyond stating that it is a "newer production" gun. The old service where you could contact them and (maybe) get a production date, is also long gone.
My sincere condolences.
