16 Gauge 1889's??

Post by AZMike »

I have been looking for ANY 16 gauge 89's, don't seem to see them around. How many of you Remington collectors have found a 16 gauge 1889?

Interesting question Mike. These won't help much but are interesting

Unfortunately undated hardware catalog listing only 12g

1904 Supplee Hdw. listing with 10, 12 & 16g

Remington catalog listing (Researcher will know the date) showing only 12 & 10g

Recently there was a Model 1889 for sale on Gunbroker that the seller said was a 16 gauge, but it was in poor condition and I wasn't interested. The 1899 Remington catalog lists 16 gauge 1889s, so evidently some were made.

Charlie Semmer said in his book "It is also fair to say that a 16 gauge in this model of hammer gun is unique and rarely encountered." I'd like to have one, but they don't show up every day.

There were two Remington Arms Co. catalogs in 1897, one in the spring and one in the fall. One introduced steel barrels for the Remington Hammerless Double, and the other added 16-gauges to both the hammer and hammerless guns. A bit too lazy to get out of my recliner to see which was which. Here are the hammer gun pages from the second 1901 catalog --

2shooter,
So you have them! What an advanced collection you must have amassed.
Any photos of the graded guns would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for all the replies, Mike

Here's one for sale on GunBroker: https://www.gunbroker.com/item/854023945

Made in 1899, it has some problems like a noticeable crack in the stock, but it is a 16 gauge.

Here is a link to a discussion I had with Charles Semmer regarding the 16 ga 1889 i had recently purchased in 2008. It has the lightweight frame. I love it. It has taken a lot of pheasants for me since I've owned it. if the link doesn't open up, the date of the original post was June 5, 2008
Enjoy,
Gordon
