FE Trap restoration
FE Trap restoration
I have a Remington 1894 FE grade I'm restoring. It is in nice condition but has an ugly add on pad. I am going with a Silvers red pad, almost chose a Hawkins as I've used them before also. Any other choices for period recoil pads?

Re: FE Trap restoration
A Silvers was the only pad during the years the Remington Hammerless Double was in production. Jostam was established in 1914, bringing out their Anti-Flinch pad. Other Jostam pads like the Hy-Gun and the No Kick Coming came out in the late 1920s/early 30s. The Hawkins also came out in the 1920s.
Re: FE Trap restoration
Hey, I have a friend who could use a anti-flinch pad. Too bad it still isn't made. Does someone make a Silvers look a like, or period correct looking pads ?
Re: FE Trap restoration
I bought a Silvers pad from Connecticut Shotgun/Galazan. A very nice looking pad but as hard as an adobe block! I had a nice Hawkins "Red Heart"
pad that was still very live, I also had a black one but decided on the red. I think Galazan might have some new old stock Hawkins.

Thanks, if I order one from CS I'll make sure I ask if it's hard.

Mike,
I have used original Noshoc's with good success for look and pliability.
The new Silver's to my eye look too, "Top Heavy", too much pad to thickness of baseplate.
The older Griffen & Howe solid pads were a little better but are hard to find.

I believe this spurred, leather-faced, Silvers is original on my DEO-Grade 16-gauge --

Wonderful gun Dave!
Mike I completely forgot about the spur.
That makes things a little more interesting for sure.
Not sure how I would approach but I bet it would be expensive since most of my cranky nuances are!
Let us know what you decide.

Thank you for the photo posting. I don't think that graded Remingtons give up much to the Foxes and Parkers!
Re: FE Trap restoration
Mike many years back I have a F Trap that had a Silvers pad on it. I got hold of the same recoil pad but it did not have the spur I very carefully took the liner off and the spur liner off the old pad and glued the new pad just like when it came from Remington. That original liner has Silvers name on it. It fits the stock perfect with same length of pull.
Re: FE Trap restoration
Boy, is that ever a beautiful looking gun. It's just too bad Remington didn't promote their high grade guns more. They don't hold a 2nd candle to anyone.
Re: FE Trap restoration
In the past I've used Brownells acra-glass with their black die coloring [ that's included with the acra-glass] to create the spur. Just a idea.
