1894 with an unusual frame and barrel lock-up

Post by Jack71 »

On page 285 of Charles Semmer's book he shows a Grade B 1894 with a bridge between the frame sides. Part of the barrel lump is milled down to the barrel flat. He believed that this might be an experimental design and to his knowledge it was the only one like it. It is serial number 102693 and was made in 1895.

Currently there is another 1894 Grade B gun for sale on Gunbroker (item# 768825942) that shows this same feature. It is serial number 101001 and would also date from 1895.

The gun isn't mine and I have no connection to the seller, but I just wanted to point it out here on the forum. And this certainly isn't offered as a criticism of Mr. Semmer or his book, he wrote it over 20 years ago and today it is much easier to see and study examples of these old guns with the internet resources we now have.

Has anyone else here seen this type of frame and barrel lock-up on another Remington double?

They were pretty common in the first 9000 guns. My Father's AE-Grade in the 103xxx range and a BE-Grade that I have in the 101xxx range are both made in that style.

Jack71 and Researcher I had recently purchased the bridge frame gun that was on
Gun broker site #101001 and has some usual features that I would like too see if
anyone has input on.
First is that there are no patent dates on
the frame or forend, second is the number
45496 stamped on front barrel lug and
third is the different engraving pattern on
frame sides. The but trigger floor plate and
top tang and forend are normal for the most part. Barrels are stamped p BJC and would
anyone know what J and C represent?
Any input on this gun would be great.

My BE-Grade 101315 has Chain Damascus barrels --

and the bottom of the barrel tubes are marked B J E.

In Charles Semmer's book on page 275, he pictures the Damascus patterns salesman's samples, and the Chain Damascus is called CHAIN J. So, I have suspected that the J on my barrels has to do with the barrel material.

The truth is that no one left alive really knows what all the markings on these old Remington doubles mean.

Thanks for the reply,
As stated my barrels are stamped BJC and is a 3 blade oxford 4.S.J. damascus.
Does your 1895 BE have the two patent dates on the frame and the one on the forend iron ?

No patent dates on watertable or forearm iron on my early BE-Grade. By the time my Father's AE-Grade in the 103xxx range, also a "bridge frame" was made, they had the patent date roll-stamp.

Here is a very early gun, also without patent dates --
