1889 Restoration

Post by jaxenro »

OK here's a harder question. I am looking at a 1889 grade 3 that is mechanically sound but will be in need of a full cosmetic restoration. The finish is mostly worn off and it will need refinishing and case hardening, the barrels need refinishing, and the stock needs refinishing. Who do you recommend to do this type work, who have you used in the past you were happy with, and ballpark what does it cost (knowing there are 100 unknown variables that affect cost)?

I understand at the end of the day I will probably end up with a gun worth less than I put into it but this isn't about making money. Part of the joy of ownership to me is restoring something like this to new condition.

If you find a Model 1889 with 28 inch barrels check them close to make sure they are not cut off and factory original. Unless that does not matter to you.

It depends. I'd like to cut one to coach gun length, say 20", but not if they are factory length. But if they have been shortened already I don't see the harm in cutting them again. So either way is good

I've used Doug Turnbull for color case hardening and blueing steel barrels on two 1900s and one 1894. Work was good and a reasonable price. For a 1900 in about 1996 it was $330 which included raising a couple minor dents and return shipping. I must add that I did all the prep work to keep cost down.

Since then I do all my blueing.

I would think the blueing cost for damascus barrels would be more than steel because it is more time and labor intensive.

I haven't had any outside wood work done.

What's your S/N?

If you don't mind a restored gun, I believe there is a Grade 3 on Gunbroker that has been there for a while. Looks pretty nice best I can remember and I'm sure you can pick it up for much less that the work cost to get it to look that way.

I don't mind restorations my only point being you can't expect to make your money back on it. I chalk the "loss" up to enjoyment

Cost - around 1500. Depends on how much barrel and stock work is needed.
