Heavy Duck Guns

Post by AZMike » Thu Nov 29, 2018 8:00 am

I have a couple of Remington hammer guns that are heavy duck guns. One is an 1878 Whitmore grade 3, it weighs 9.5 lbs.
The gun that I'd like some help tracking is Remington 1889 # 699** 10 gauge, 32" barrels grade 3 damascus. I have not found much info other than catalog notes. It weighs over 10 pounds, the largest 89 that I'd seen.
I surely enjoy the wealth of information that comes from this great site!

According to Charlie Semmer's serial number chronology 699xx would be an 1895 vintage gun. Also according to Charlie the 10-gauge Model 1889s were built on the same frame as the 12-gauges with a 1 3/16 inch firing pin spacing, but there was also a heavy 10-gauge built on a frame with a 1 5/16 inch firing pin spacing. The November 1895 Remington Arms Co. catalog lists 10-gauge Remington New Model Double Barrel Shotguns in weights from 8 1/2 to 10 1/4 pounds.

I have a Model 1889 10 gauge grade 3 that must be just like yours. Serial #96xxx made in 1899, also with 32" barrels. The firing pin spacing is 1 5/16". It weighs 9 pounds 15 ounces. Definitely a heavy gun!

I believe I read somewhere in Charlie Semmer's book that he suspected the heavy 10 gauge guns had the firing pin retainers in the bottom of the bolsters rather than on the side. That's where they are on AZMike's gun as well as mine.
