Post by vburrell »

now here is a pic of the barrel code showing just the #5. Is this possibly a employee purchased gun?

The 5 ussually meens an employee sale, but with the stock it seems to be a little mystery. It doesnt seem to have any Remington characteristics, but seems more like a Fajen. Fajen stocks were a popular replacment stock for the 721s and the 722s. I would only guess and say the stock is not Remington. Maybe someone else could give you a more solid answer.

The lighting makes it a little tough to tell, but, to me, the cheek piece looks a little TOO defined in the area where it drops off towards the wrist of the stock......for a "factory" stock of that period.....or to have come from Remington. Looks more like a Fajen (or Bishop) stock to me.
Is that a rubber recoil pad on the butt? If so, is there any wording on it?

As far as the "5" goes, it looks to me like there are some letters to the left of it. Looks to me like it could be "ZZ" which would indicate 1953. I can't make out what's to the left of that (which would typically be the code for the month).

As I said in my previous post, that serial number appears to fall in the '51 - '52 period. It's not unusual to find a barrel code with a later date than the serial number.

It's still a "shooter"......and a nice looking gun.

The marks to the left of the 5 are all small x's they look more like they are engraved than stamped. The butt plate is plastic and says Browning. I wandered if it maybe had a rubber pad that was replaced at some time. Probably no way to know for certain about the stock. I just felt that the gun was interesting enough to look into. Thanks for the replies.

The 5 is probally a stamp from the factory, maybe an inspection or assembly stamp. The stock is not factory. The other guys are right, maybe a Fajen or Bishop.I've seen alot of those styles on older Remington's like the Model 30,720,etc.Custom job, nice one too!

I have a 1918 "custom" mauser in 6mm rem. that has a stock with the exact same profile and the exact same fore end tip and grip cap, white spacer and all. It is a Fajen stock.
