I got the rifle back from the smith today. He did a great job, I am very happy with it.
His opinion is that it is definitely factory work. The one clue he hit on is that there is
no slot cut for iron sights.

Just found the new lowest serial number 722 reported to our list.

297xx 722 300 Savage
C TT date code for 4/1948

This is a very clean gun. Rust free. Rear ring has been tapped. The barrel sights are not original. The trigger has been expertly adjusted and the screws resealed with stick shelac. All the metal is still nicely blued inside and out. The stock sports non original swivels and a "Jostam" recoil pad. Pad is pretty hard, but not dried out. The stock appears to be reoiled but is not blemished in any other way. Over all this is a very clean rifle.

23930 271 .30-06 R SS 11/47

Okay, newb here. I just purchased a Remington 721 .30-06 SPRG.

I believe the information above to be the info that I gleaned from the barrel. It is hard to know as there were marks before and after the RSS on the barrel. Also, the marks one the other side besides the REP in the box are undecipherable. And the last image is of a stamp on the underneath of the barrel. I don't understand that mark either.

I hope you all can enlighten me. I have more questions but I thought I'd help your recording of historical info first.

Is the stock original?
Can you post a picture of the stocks side at the peep sight area?
I will post the same of the 300Sav above

REM725,
I sure can. You will see when I post them that the stock was modified extensively. The cheek weld and comb have been modified/raised. The modification is actually pretty good, and appears to have been done close to the date of manufacture. I am open to any comments about this.

I have ordered two receiver plugs to replace the peep site remnants that were still attached to the rifle, as well as the rear iron sights and the front sight post. Thought the rifle appears to be dirty, there is little to no corrosion and the rifling looks sharp. Was the rifling very tight on this rifle? It appears to be at first look.

I'll post the photos as soon as I can get them uploaded. The previous photos were made by by phone. The future ones should be much better in quality.

is this called a trigger shoe?

it looks as if someone tried unsuccessfully to grind the serial number off of the inside rail of the receiver. They were unsuccessful and the rail is still smooth but marred. Bolt is smooth and tight.

Better image of the proof mark and other. What does the 0 stand for, to the left of the R.E.P. stamp?

Bolt is definitely in need of cleaning

Probably good for now.

This is the partial peep sight that came with the rifle. I believe it is a Redfield No. 70 Micrometer Receiver Sight (peep sight)

On the above 300S, I wonder if the stocks relief at the peep area is factory. I sure looks like it could be for the rear side scope mount when the rear ring is untapped.

Here is a side rear mount on a Model 70

It looks as if it could be factory. The modifications to the cheek weld are definitely not, but it puts me comfortably at eye level with
The scope.

I cannot find parts for the Redfield sight even at the suggested looking places from another thread here.

My thoughts are, eventually, to remove and save this stock, and replace it with a synthetic one to make it lighter in the field.

I am new to hunting, well animals anyway. Used to train for the two legged kind for uncle sam.

At a gunshow today I picked up a 725 in 30-06.

Serial # 700743
Barrel stamp LE Feb. 1958
This looks like the lowest serial numbered 725 listed on this site so far.

I just picked up a mint condition model 725 in 280 serial 7033xx code appears to be PE
It is really nice; it has never even had a scope mounted and is correct down to the front sight hood.

I just traded for my first 722. Its a 300S that barely looks used. It is not drilled and tapped in the rear. Bore is nice and shiny. Has one scratch on the stock and the stock has not been cut for peep sights. Yall let me know what I have, I traded an H&R Handi Rifle in 450 Marlin for it. Was that a good deal?

Shoot us some pictures. I want to see the stock at the peep sight area left side.
