Thank you very much for the information. I have another question regarding the stock. It is not the plain wood stock, it appears to be stained Tiger Maple. The marking on the pistol grip and buttplate look exactly like the proof marks on the barrel. Any thoughts ? Thanks.

First, I’ve found this post very useful. Thank you for everyone’s contributions.

I inherited my grandfather’s 721 earlier this year upon my dad’s passing. From what I could glean, my grandfather’s 721 30-06 was manufactured in September, 1948. Could someone with more expertise than me (of which I have none) either verify, or correct my assessment, and perhaps offer any other details that these photos might reveal?

Thank you in advance. I have lots of questions like these, which I did not have the opportunity to ask my dad about before he passed.

Thanks for the entry.
It fits in our list right here
439xx 722-300S D/TT 9/48 rear ring not tapped
442xx 721-3006 D/TT 9/48 rear ring is/was tapped
452xx 721-3006 W/TT 8/48

The different wood tip is an alteration.
Can you compare the screw holes in the rear receiver ring to the ones in the front ring. If you can tell that they are "factory" drilled appearing cleanly machined like the front holes, or they are rougher in appearance if drilled aftermarket, we would like to know. Aftermarket holes may not show the same blueing appearance.

Serial # 718204-458 win mag-made in 1961-26"barrel with factory muzzle brake

281xx 300Savage is one of the earliest 722 on our list. A=Mar, TT=1948.

Other marks are proofs, and assembly marks

Howdy all - Just signed on to add one more to your list: Model 725, S/N 716xxx, date code PG, cal. .244 Rem. It has the faster ROT. I thought when I checked it was 1/9", but that was several years ago. Probably is actually the advertised 1/10" ROT. I'll have to double check when I can. Believe it's in its original livery, but missing the front sight hood. Has fixed sling swivels (original?). Condition OA is VG - Exc, with a couple of minor varnish mars where it got chipped off. Bluing is Exc. Photos? - Maybe (if/when I learn how!)

To all
I just noticed the date on the first post.
I have been doing this list for 16 years. Wow!
I must like these old Remingtons. :D

Seems that only the wood and the trigger guard bluing is faded is worn on this. I'm guessing is that this was used as a hunting rifle most of its life and only shot minimally, the stork and bluing wear on the trigger guard is constant with that activity.

The bigger problem is, like a Lion that has taste Human Blood, I think I'm addicted to this particular model and I find myself scouring the used gun market looking for another! Seems I'm stuck on finding a low number 200xxx range and one in 300 H&H. Why? LOL, that's a good question I can't seem to answer.

Not my first Remington addiction, I've lost count on the number of model 12's .22 slide actions I have.. somewhere around fourteen I think. and 500 Series 22's its gotta be around sixteen or so.

I just brought another Remington 721 home less than an hour ago, haven't cleaned it yet. Nice condition 1953 in 300 H&H. Can wait to clean her up and take her to the range. Just need to find some 300 H&H brass to reload.
