Randall,
What you have is a Model 14 1/2. This is the pistol cartridge version of the Model 14. It was made in 38-40 and 44-40. Depending on the length of the barrel it is either a rifle or carbine. I don't have serial number information handy, but it might have a date code on the left side of the barrel near the receiver, which would give the date of manufacture.

According to the serial number table listed in the 2nd qtr. journal, s/n 42000 was made in 1915. Date coding only started in 1921, so your gun would not have one. The model 14 and the 14 1/2 used the same serial number block of numbers. The 14 1/2 was made from 1914 thru about 1925, but was listed in the catalog thru 1931 as "subject to stock on hand"

Thank you all for your help (The Facts So Far)

Remington 44 Serial No C 46031
The rifle is a Remington Model 14 1/2 Slide-Action rifle.
This model was introduced in 1913, one year after the introduction of the Remington Model 14.
These two models were based on a design by John D. Pedersen of Denver, Colorado, who designed many firearms, pistols shotguns and rifles, for Remington.

He worked with Remington for over 20 years.

The retail price list of January 12, 1914 offered the Model 14-1/2A, "Standard" Grade rifle with 22.5 inch barrel and pistol grip stock for $17.25 and the Model 14-1/2R carbine with an 18.5 inch barrel and straight grip stock and saddle ring for $16.75.
Both variations were chambered for .38-40 W.C.F. or .44-40 W.C.F. ammunition.
The Model 14 1/2 was nearly identical to the Model 14 except for the chambering, barrel length and markings.
Remington's 1917 catalog indicates two types of rear sight available on a Model 14-1/2: "Patented quick-adjustable straight bar rear sight and new design copper bead front sight. Wide or narrow buckhorn rear sight supplied with extra charge on special order".
The sight on this rifle is a receiver sight that was added later to the gun. Receiver sights became popular in the 1930s and 40s in the USA. Originally, it had a wheel sight that utilized the rear dovetail and slot behind the dovetail on the barrel.

Production records of both models were intermixed showing a total
Production of 125,020 rifles between 1911 and 1934.

The barrel markings are the "type 1" used until 1916, but some guns made after that have the same what we call roll marking, ending with the 1912 patent date.. If barrels were already stamped, Remington was not going to throw them away, however, and this roll marking sometimes appears on guns made later. The company serialed their model 14(calibers 25, 30, 32, and 35 Remington) with the 14-1/2 receivers(38-40 & 44-40), so consequently, no one knows how many 14-1/2s were produced. While the 14 were made from 1912-1935, the14-1/2 was only made from 1914-1925. They had some in stock, and also continued to sell 14-1/2s for a few years afterwards, with them last appearing in the 1931 catalog. Actually, the 38-40 supply ran out about 1928 or 29 and it was only the 44-40 that made it to 31. Estimates of total 14-1/2 production ranges from 2000-8000. In all, 125,054 rifles of both types were made, with the vast majority being 14s. The "C" on the receiver is not part of the serial number. It, instead, refers to that size receiver used on both 14s and 14-1/2s. C means "Repeating Sporting Rifle, High Power, Pederson's Patents".
Your rifle, Serial Number "C 46031" was made in 1915. The first serial number that year was 38246 while the last was 46759.

Possible History:
Remington Society was made aware that the British government placed an order in April, 1915, for 4000 rifles for use with the Royal Navy Air Service. After the war, we believe, these rifles made their way to Canada and Australia. Value is generally based on condition. In the US, they usually go for around $500-600us

Sounds like a Remington Model 14 to me.

Post by Walt Shipman »

Seeing how you say it is chambered for .32 Remington, what you have sounds like a Remington Model 14 to me. I guess it could possibley be a Remington Model 25 in .32-20, but I would think the caliber would be marked something besides .32 Remington, like say .32-20. A little more information would help pin it down.
