Model 14/141 Carbine ID Help Please

Post by FishinDVM »

Hello everyone! I am new here but looking for some info on this rifle. This rifle originally was given to me by my father (never used/fired). He got it from a client/woman whose husband had passed and also didnt hunt but kept it as a collectors item. Now, I was originally under the impression (told) that this was a Model 14, however I now believe it to be a Model 141 carbine in .32cal based on solely my online digging. So, I have read different opinions on a few forums (like the stock not being straight means its not a 14 carbine, or maybe it was cut down, etc...), but I figured this is the place for real info.

What I know for absolute certainty is that this is .32cal, its a true carbine definitely NOT a cut barrel, and measures 18.25" at least from how *I* am measuring it (so maybe 18 or 18.5 if measured properly?). I have heard through a few people that the person I want is "Tom Hemphill" but I am certainly open to everyones opinions. I am going to post a bunch of pictures on here to be as accurate as possible.

A friend of mine called Remington for me earlier today while I was at work, and read off the serial # C29915. The person on the phone looked it up and said it was made in 1937 (and couldnt say much else about it whatsoever otherthan that date) which is what makes me lean towards that 141 carbine transition period based on that year. And I am not sure what the dates on the side of the barrel are in reference to? They are all much earlier than the 1937 listed on the phone, but maybe these dates aren't specific for that individual rifle? There are so many conflicting reports I cant make sense of it all, like the varying reports on stock types (pistol vs straight) and some that came or didnt come the way everyone says they are supposed to, or the "Gamemaster" symbol that should be on the 141s but of course isnt on ALL the 141s, etc... etc... etc... Anyhow, here are my questions:

1) First things first, what is it, 14 or 141? A 141 carbine or 14 carbine?

2) C 29915... does the "C" actually mean something? I have heard it means "special" I have heard it implys it's supposed to have a checkered pistol grip?

3) Do you think this stock is original or has it been replaced? If this stock is different than what is expected, does that mean it HAS to have been replaced or where there at least SOME variations/exceptions in how they were originally ordered?

4) If this is a real carbine, I may actually start hunting with it. Now obviously I wouldnt alter the rifle in any way (like tapping for a scope or something) but I lack understanding for the significance of it being a 141 carbine if it is. Meaning, is it "special" enough that you all would recommend using it as a collectors item only? Or would you say a 141 carbine is slightly more sought after but I'd certainly still use it?

5) As for cleaning, clearly the metal has seen better days. At this point though, how would you suggest I go about cleaning it up and which products would you use?

Thank you to anyone who replies!!! Chris

Chris:
Your gun is a Model 14R, in other words, a carbine with an 18½" barrel. The serial number indicates that it was made in 1914 but as they did not always produce guns in serial number order, it could have been made a couple of years later. Carbine production seems to have started during the last two months of 1914. As to the stock, most carbines into the twenties were straight stocked with either a hard rubber or a steel shotgun style buttplate. Yours has a semi pistol grip stock which usually is found on rifles, however, you could order that stock on a carbine for $2.75 accordingly to the 1918 catalog, so the stock could be original. I can't find my 1915 catalog at the moment so I'm looking at 1918. The roll mark on the barrel is what we call a "Type 1" and it appeared in 1913 and generally is found on guns before 1916. The "C" above the serial indicates that it is a "Repeating Sporting Rifle, High Power, Pederson's Patents". This letter "C" is found on all model 14s up to around 94000. The gun is definitely a real carbine. My database indicates that they made several around that serial number range. I would recommend getting some ammo and shooting the thing and enjoying it....tom hemphill
