Year of Manufacture Rem model 25

Post by elindst »

I have a Remington model 25 in 25-20 serial number 8632 with date code BQ

I gather the B means January - but cannot find the letter Q until the 70's which is not possible.

Any help would be appreciated.

The serial falls into 1924 production. The most likely explanation
is that 1923 was "P" and the guy stamping the date in January just figured
they would go with "Q" as the next letter in the alphabet. Then Remington felt the "Q" looked too much like an "O" and skipped over it and went to "R".

My educated guess is that its January 1924 and your rifle isn't the first to
have an odd barrel code. That's my view and I'm sticking to it. Tom Hemphill might give you a response later, he's probably "the guy" when
it comes to the Model 25. Keep in mind that Remington did not always produce rifles in order of serial

In January, 1924 Remington started with the year code letter "Q" but they only used it in January production. On a database that records information on 800 model 25s, I find it on 14 listings and on my model 14 database consisting of 2600 entries, only 1 rifle has the Q. After January, Q was dropped and the year letter for the rest of 1924 became "R". The "Q" in the Remington barrel code would not appear again until 1978 and once again in 1996.........tom

One more thing. Jim said Remington did not always produce guns in serial number order. Well the "Q" on the 25s I have listed range from 136X all the way to 10,1XX. In between I record build codes that go from December, 1922 to as late as 1934.......tom

Hi Tom.
I'm not quite sure what you're saying here, but I have a Model 25 in .25-20 and the serial number is 312XX date code is "O E" (July 1936). So, if that's helpful to adding to your list........
I purchased it at an estate auction in about 1991 and found out a short time later that it had been previously owned by a person who was heavily into collecting and selling Remington 25s about 30 years ago in Pennsylvania. He had sold it to the person whose estate sale I purchased it from. Somewhere in my files I have a letter from him, but can't find it at the moment. His initials are O. S. I don't know if he has ever been a member of this forum, but I've often wondered about it.

Just picked one up, in 25-20 cal. Serial 643X on the receiver and above that AA. On the left side of the barrel is AY so I guess March of 1930?

You are correct in the build code indicating March, 1930 on a serial range that would normally is 1923 production. Is there any number behind the AY? I list another close the that serial that carries a code indicating 6/30, but also has a 2 behind it, indicating a barrel alone that was sold on that date. If you could give me a private message giving the full serial I would appreciate it for my database..............tom
