721 serial #

Post by Cheap Shot »

My dad has an old 721 wants to sell. I listed it for him on an online auction and everyone asks "What is the serial number?" The problem is, I can't find it, anywhere. Any advice?

721 ser#

I have a 722 (short action ) of the 721 , from 1950 and the serial # is right where they currently are on the 700 series rifles. Front receiver ring left side ( as gun is pointing away from you) I have heard some folks saying that they have the serial number on the inside of their receiver somewhere but I never seen one with that being the case. The bolt should have the serial # etched on the body of the bolt visible when you pull the bolt out of the receiver. In any case serial # won't tell you exactly when the gun was manufactured any how. Just in front of the receiver on left side should be 2 or 3 tiny letters on the barrel , this may have some other symbols on either or both ends like a star ,or a squiggly , or lightning bolt looking thing a ma bob , but the 2or 3 letters is the barrel code that will tell month and year of manufacture example, XYY or ADD or something to that effect. go to http://www.oldguns.net and at the left side of their home page is a link to enter in your code and it will tell you the age of your gun , 721,722's were made from 1948-1961 and the codes sometimes were repeated on other models but if your search falls between these two years than it is most likely correct.

Thanks for your response.

I did notice the symbols you mentioned, it has a club and a diamond (like playing cards). But no serial #.

The serial number is on the left side front receiver ring or the very early made ones (like the first 30,000 or so made in 1948) had the number inside the left bolt locking lug channel above the follower. Anything else is not regular.

The date code stamped on the barrel just in front of the left side of the receiver will be 2-3 letters long. There has been a link to this info on this site. Example OUU = 7-1949. O for the 7th month and UU for 1949. Letters WW for 1950. XX for 1951. YY for 1952. ZZ for 1953. Then they began the alphabet again with single letter for the year. A for 1954. B for 1955. And so on. They did not use the letters I, O, Q, V. Marking AE would be March 1958.

Month letters are the twelve letters BLACKPOWDERX for months 1-12 in order. B for Jan. L for Feb. and so on.
