Model 12 Dating and Version Question

Post by mlilly »

I have a Remington Model 12 from my father who passed away. He was a retired gunsmith and this was one of his favorites. I have read many online resources to dating Model 12s and I think it is a Model 12A, but it does not have a serial number and the date stamping is not clear, it has at least two M's maybe three, though it looks like one was possibly a bad stamp. It also has some other stamps I have not been able to find definitions for.

On the top of the barrel, it
Patent No. 1,481,638 1,628,548 1,682,704
so from Patent date information it looks like it was made after the last patent stamp issued April 28, 1928
There are no marking on the sides, bottom or top of the breech.

I have attached a few images, which I hope help. On the bottom of the breech, there is no stamping, not inside the breach that I can find. The only place I have not looked yet is to remove the rear site to look under it and on top of the barrel, though I can not see any indicatation there is stamping here.

Thanks for the input, please let me know what other information would help......Michael
