remington model 81 35 Cal

I was wondering if anyone can tell me whether or not any shells have to be in the gun in order for the action to be released. I obtained the gun from my father in law and was cleaning it up. Once the action is pulled back(loading positon) it will not go forward. Any info would much appreciated. Thanks

The release is located on the lower left (non-bolt) side of the receiver in the center. Its a small flat piece. pushing it down will release the bolt. hope this helps--joe

Thanks. The release wasn't working at the time. Forgot to mention that. Anyways, I took it apart, looked it over and put it back together. Now everyting works like it is supposed to. Sure is a nice gun to shoot.
