I have a Model 30 Express in 30 Remington caliber. I bought it in '87 and haven't shot it much. It has a factory installed Lyman 48 rear sight and was never drilled and tapped for a scope. With my jacketed reloads with spitzer bullets, it shoots about 8" high with the rear sight all the way down @ 100.
My question is.......... how much would it effect the value if I drilled and tapped it for a Model 30 scope base?
My other question is........ I haven't kept up on the value of these guns, I payed $300 for it in '87. What is a average price today in Very good condition. Only small handling marks on the stock and metal in excellent condition.
Third question..... how do you date a model 30? My serial # is 8761.

Frank:
Last question first...your gun is probably made around 1926, based on those listed on my database. If you look on the right side of the barrel, or the side with the proof mark, you will find two letters that tell the month and year it was built. The second letter is probably a "T". You can be sure that drilling and tapping will drive down the value and, rather than do that, I would suggest getting a shorter front sight blade or loading 180 grain bullets for the thing. The most popular standard load for a 30 Remington was probably a 170 grain bullet, and you might find something around that weight solves the problem. If you would like to contact me, I would like to get more information on the rifle for my database and I may be able to answer further questions. hemphill@gvtel.com
