Remington Lever Action Rifle??

Post by Hardrada55 »

While looking through my new book "The Great Remington Eight" about the Remington Model 8 autoloading rifle, on page 6 there is a list of model numbers and letter symbols for Remington firearms from 1912. The Remington Model 8 is letter symbol "G". Curiously, the letter "N" was set aside for a "Lever Action Repeating Rifle (Equipment Started, but never built)". It appears to fall between the gun allocated for the letter "M", a "single barrel shotgun semi-hammerless, 1893 and the letter "O", a "double barrel shotgun, hammer" and "P" and "Q", a "double barrel shogun, hammerless, 1894. It looks like this gun may have been contemplated during 1893-94. So maybe this question would be better placed in the Pre-1898 category, forgive me. Does anyone know anything about this Remington Lever Action Repeating Rifle? Was it a Browning design or Petersen or Barnes or who? Are there patent drawings that still exist? Thanks

Remington Lever Action Rifles

Remington, in the 1870s and 1880s, had a very talent group of inventors. Lewis L. Hepburn was one of these men. He invented the Remington-Hepburn No. 3 single shot rifle, which was used in many target rifles including the long range Creedmoor rifles.

He also developed in the early 1880s a series of lever action rifles. These were never put into production as Remington went bankrupt in 1886. Hepburn left Remington and went to work for Marlin. He designed the Marlin lever actions that are still in production today.

The 1966 catalog of the old Remington Museum showed several of the original Hepburn lever actions.
