dating a 700 bdl

Post by bigsevenfan »

thanks in advance for your help in .....dating a 700 BDL in 7mm RM
I've looked at the info online and can't make sense of some of it. I think I have a 1964 BDL... but not for sure.
The serial number is - 6454879
on one side of the barrel - in order from left to right is: a leaf type stamp, the letter "O", the letter "U" and then the number "64"
on the other side of the barrel: a symbol that I don't recognize, "REP" inside a stamped oval, the letter "M" and then an 1/2 moon or 1/4 moon symbol.
Thanks Jerry

Use this link to date the manufacture.

https://www.remingtonsociety.org/manufacture-dates/

I will make a calculated guess that the date of manufacture is July 1971.......(I also have a 7mm Rem Mag with a similar (but slightly higher) serial number.....but same letter codes......July 71).

Mine is an ADL.......with beautiful figured wood in the butt stock. Probably should have been a BDL, too.

I think I was confused by the number 64.
What you say now makes sense.
Thanks again

I also meant to add one other thing that helps dating that gun.
The first digit "6" (six million) was added in 1969 or 1970.
Prior to that, they had six-digit serial numbers.
In about 1975, they started adding letter prefixes.
"A" was from about 1975 - 1980, "B" was from about 1980 - 1985, "C" was from about 1985 - 1990, etc. I have quite a few with the "A", "B" and "C" prefixes as well as having some preceding the "6" prefix as well as with the "6" prefix.
