50/70 Saddle Ring Carbine

Post by J B Fiedler »

I have a 20" round barreled, 50/70 cal., saddle ring carbine with no serial numbers. The tang has three lines of patents starting with the word Remingtons. the barrel band has a U stamped on it and there are the letters FB by the barrel witness mark. The forearm has FCW in script on the right side. The rear sight is a folding sight with increments marked 3,5, and7. The rifle came out of midwestern Canada and I thought it might be a NY militia carbine, but the hammer doesn't fall to halfcock when the breech is closed. Any information would be appreciated.

Your carbine seems to have a parts from another model, so it is hard to tell what is original. The "FCW" cartouche on the forestock indicates a Navy M1867 part. The "FB" on the top of the barel has been noted on other carbines, but .43 Spanish caliber, and we don't know the meaning yet. If the last patent date on the tang in 1871, the carbine dates from before 1879, If the last patent date is 1874 then it is a much later gun.
