Seeking history of rolling block circa 1879

My friend possesses a rifle with the following markings. E. Remington & Sons, Ilion, NY. H.E. Burns Oct 7, 1879, serial # 3870. It is believed to have been in the same family since its original purchase. The barrel length is approx 29 1/2 inches, caliber unknown but larger than 22.
