Hi There,

What you have is a "sporterized" Swedish rolling block.
Some of the Swedish rolling blocks were updated by
re-heat treating the actions, fitting a new breach block
and hammers and re-barreling them to 8x58mmR.
These were known as the 1867/89 model. This was a
stop gap measure and these were issued to the Swedish
army. Most of these conversions were done from 1889 to
1894. Yours is particularly late because the Swedish army
adopted the Mauser in 1896.

Good Luck!

Thank you Mr. Webb !

Is that CROWN Stamp that of Carl Gustav ? i.e SWEDISH not Danish.....
What does the "J.M. G.M" mean ? Inspectors ?

I am not up on those different countries "Over There" !
I was told this rifle was Danish ! ! !

Do you think the STEEL in my rifle was made for the 'new smokeless'
powders ? There is 1896 stamped into the Stock.
I am wondering how careful I need to be making reloads.....

It would be set up for the 8mmx58r Danish Krag cartridge - correct ?

I want to upgrade it back to Military Configuration, however, it does
not have the typical "Ladder Sights" on it.

Hi There,

The Crown C on the barrel does stand for the Carl Gustav
factory. The letters below that are the initials of the inspectors
that approved the work.

These do use the Danish Krag Jorgensen 8mm round (8x58R).

Although these were re-heat treated and new beach blocks
and hammers installed, the pressure they were proofed for
was relatively low. A quick search of 8x58R turned up that
the pressure for this cartridge is about 28,000 psi. Most high
power smokeless rifle cartridges are 40,000+ psi. Therefore,
I wouldn't re-barrel it for any cartridge that was higher in
pressure.

Restoring this rifle to original military configuration would be
difficult and costly. You would be better served to buy one of
these that was still in its original configuration.

Good Luck!

I thought, from my web browsing, that there is a difference between
the 8mmx58r Danish Krag round - and - the 8mmx58R Krag-Jorgensen
round.

The former was made for my Rolling Block and the latter (much more
powerful) was made for the slightly later arriving Krag-Jorgensen Bolt
Action rifle.

Same dimensions, but very dangerous to use in the Rolling Block !

I believe it is in a warning statement by "The Dutchman"...

Hi There,

You have done much more research into the 8x58R than
I have (which is good). I was unaware of a loading specific
to the rolling block. It would be interesting to know what
the pressure spec.s for that load were.

Still, I think one should be very conservative when using
one of these old actions for building a rifle and expecting
to shoot high power caliber in it because it has been proofed
for smokeless powder. I don't know if this was your intent
when you mentioned "Do you think the STEEL in my rifle was
made for the 'new smokeless' powders?
" I just wanted to stress
that these old actions were not proofed for high pressure.

-Good Luck!-
