remington keene bolt action magazine carbine
Does anybody on the forum have information regarding the 24" barrel, United States Interior Depart contract, specifically the total produced by serial # range and year of production. Thanks

Re: remington keene bolt action magazine carbine
Hi,
There is an eight page article “The Indian Police Remingtons Part I” by Don Ware and Slim Kohler in the November 1992 Gun Report Magazine. In it they said there were at least four but possible five orders of 160 rifles bringing the total to 800 rifles. They also said they believed the Indian Police Keene rifles were serial numbered in their own range. However they said that with only five rifles examined that theory was inconclusive. From this article it looks like the rifles were shipped between April of 1880 until around the middle of 1881. I have a list of twenty two U.S.I.D. marked Keen rifles the lowest being #3 and the highest #479.

Aside from being a strong candidate for the ugliest rifle ever produced, I can add very little to the previous response. I did not cover them in my "More .45-70s" book because they were not made at SA, but I do know that the USID guns are, by far, the most-desirable variation of a seldom-seen gun. Also, they are usually found in terrible condition - that one is a beauty!

There is conflict in the literature about these guns, specifically whether they are "rifles" or "carbines". I believe the early Remington catalogues refer to the model as a rifle. Is there a consensus among today's Remington specialists about which category they are best classified in?
