I am new to black powder and black powder cartridge rifles. I have an old Springfield trapdoor and what I believe to be a Remington No. 1 sporting rifle. The Remington is where I need some help. I have tried to identify it myself but I haven't been able to find out much. Here is what I know:
Barrel length - 34" full octagon
Receiver width - front = 1.220"± , rear = 1.193"±
Tang - appears to be same length top and bottom, however, the lower tang is curved or contoured for the pistol grip on the stock
Extractor - rotary style
Sights - rear vernier tang sight only, front globe with removable spirit level
The only markings on the receiver are the patent dates on the side, nothing on the tang.
Barrel is stamped on the top E Remington & Sons Ilion, NY and 45 2/10 on the bottom for the caliber designation
I have more images but apparently I can only upload 5
any help would be greatly appreciated

Re: Help with Rolling Block Identification
i'm uploading a few more images. Proper identification is really just a curiosity as I like the rifle regardless. its in beautiful condition, accurate and, its just a fun rifle to shoot. But, i am curious as to why it has a saddle ring with such a long barrel.

Re: Help with Rolling Block Identification
I know little about RBs but I observe that a Remington Arms Co butt plate is used while the barrel is stamped E. Remington & Sons. Appears that your RB may have been assembled from two or more guns. That might settle the saddle ring question as well.

Re: Help with Rolling Block Identification
Considering all the places Remington serial numbered the early Sporting Rifles, it would be easy to pull the forearm and buttstock to see if all numbers match on the barrel, frame, triggerplate, etc. I also think it's likely an assembled gun from more than one.
But it's a beautiful gun and I sure like it!
