Help Identifying Rolling Block

Post by Blastattack »

I have been offered this rolling block and I am attempting to figure what exactly what it is before I agree to purchase it. Could anyone give me some insight?

The rifle is apparently chambered in 30-40 Krag.

Appears to be one of the #5 Model 1897 carbines. Built 1897 to 1905. A very neat version to own in my opinion.

This is a parts gun that was probably put together by Bannerman Company in the early 1900's. The frame, breech block, hammer and buttstock are from a Model 1871 New York State Rolling Block Rifle, the gun barrel and rear sight are from a 1898 Krag Rifle. Since the gun has a Krag rifle sight on it, I would think that the original rifle barrel was cut down to carbine length and a new front sight was added to it. About 15,000 NYS State Rifles were made from 1871 to 1876, the guns were made for shooting a black powder cartridge and not a smokeless cartridge. The Model 1896, 1897 and 1901 rolling block rifles and carbines were made for the high pressures of the smokeless cartridge. The gun may not be safe to shoot hot high pressure ammo in it. I would have a gunsmith look at it.

Have a Good Day,
Matt

Apologies for the upside down pictures! I didn't think they were that way!

Thanks for the input. I was really hoping it was a "modern" Smokeless action, but my fears of it being a black powder action have been confirmed. I will pass on this deal and send the info to the seller. Thanks again for the assistance.

My first thought was a RB action with a Krag bbl. See that is also someone else's basic opinion. No idea if Bannerman did these, but... I have a good friend who actually worked for Bannerman in the Day! If you want to send me pics, I would be happy to send them to him and get his opinion. PM if interested.
