Looking for any information on this old Remington cartridge. Especially rim size and base diameter. Trying to figure out how or if it differs from the .40-50 Sharps Straight?
I am picking up a Remington Rolling Block Sporting Rifle in .40 1 7/8 (.40-45 Rem. Str.) and hope it might interchange with the .40-50 Sharps, or something else. Can't find this cartridge listed in Cartridges of the World, but I see it listed in Marcot's Rolling Block book.
.40 1 7/8 or .40-45 Rem. Straight.

I *think* (pretty sure) the 40 1 7/8 is a .40-50....

Thanks! I did some more searching in my library and found in Rowe's Hepburn book on page 324 that he says they are the same. Remington must have just seated their bullet deeper and got 5 less grains of powder.
Now I need to find dies and some donor .303 British, or .30-40 Krag brass to make cases!

Picked up 100 new .303 British brass, and began the task of opening up necks to .40 caliber, and trimming a good deal off the length. Have a few cases now that drop in the chamber nicely. Will need final fire forming, but they're close enough that I'll load them with a load I think will work, and see how it shoots.
