Number 2 in .22 rimfire.

Post by 45Bravo »

Hi, I just came into a number 2, with a 34xx serial number.
It has the tang sight, and all looks to be original.

Great patina.

On the side of the barrel is engraved "7th Hog Fair, 1879. "

Any idea on age?
(Obviously at least 1879).

Any other info out there?

With the engraving, it may have passed through a collectors hands or been seen at a show.

It IS nice. I wonder if it was a prize? From the 7th Hog Fair!

Pictures of the sights (barrel and front), barrel markings, top tang markings (if any--unlikely, underneath the tang sight base) and the forend tip would help with estimating the rifle's age. The "half moon" swells on the grip area and the rear of the forend indicate relatively early production (pre-1900). The best source , by far, is Roy Marcot's book, "Remington Rolling Block Sporting Rifles, Carbines, and Shotguns."

Wow! What a beautiful example of a RRB #2. You really have a very nice rifle there. I have essentially the same rifle in a #1, but in .38 caliber. These are really sweet shooting rifles. Yes, I still shoot mine.

Barrel rollstamp markings will help determine the approximate date made, or narrow it down closely.
