?s on #5 RB Rifle with full Mexican Crest.

Post by wsmrto »

I picked this up at a GS while traveling as the Crest is so deep and clearly struck. The rifle appears to be a standard #5 with several ?? The last date on the tang is March 18 1874! The barrel has 7mm --SM and left side tang has 7127 in large stamp. Some pitting under the wood on barrel and very little on action and tang. The bore cleaned up to nearly bright shine and no pitting. I have been picking up RB the last few years and this and an 02 SRC in 7mm, plus a Swede in 8X58 which is mint and a blast to shoot are some of my favorite shooters. I am cleaning this new RB and am very interested in what the ID is with an 1874 Pat. date. Any help. Thanks

I have a Model 5 also with a Mexican Crest, 7MM SM on the barrel, the tang number on mine is 7141. From what I have learned from others, it is only the Mexican issued rifles, like ours, that carry anything close to a serial number. I think the total count was about 9000, with a sale price of $15 each. I cannot determine if the price included the bayonet, some which had "Republicana Mexicana" stamped on the guard. I have owned mine since 1959.

All I can find as far as value is " The Mexican Crest issues will bring a premium". I find only a very few #5's mentioned on the auctions and for sale sites, never with the Mexican crest. Any idea what they are worth? Thanks

There are always many #5's for sale on Gunbroker.com. Prices vary, and it does not appear than many sell. I have never heard the Mexican rifles carry a premium, however they are pre 1899 so they can sell more easily.

There are a number of different Rolling Block rifles being listed on the auctions sites from time to time, the most prominent are the Danish, Swedish, Argentinian, and the Mexican .43 Spanish Reformado, and all of these are antiques and can sell directly to the buyer, the Argentina and Ovido Arsenal made rifles are built on the No. 1 action and are considered to be black powder loadings or equivalent smokeless loads only, but the Mexican 7mm is built on the #5 action as you mentioned and is stronger of course as it was built to shoot the 7x58 mouser round. I have two of the Argentine rifles chambered for the .43 Spanish Remington, which is a necked round, and one of the Mexican Ovido Arsenal rifles chambered for the .43 Spanish Reformado, the case for these is straight walled right up to the end then it has a slight shoulder on it.
