There are a couple of illegible lines in the old between-the-wars factory ledger, but the receiver with serial number 1540811 was put in work between 1 Aug 1940, when they had reached 1539712, and 30 November 1940 when they had reached 1542974. When the 16-gauge was introduced in 1931, the Model 11s began with serial number 1500000 and the "Sportsman" had their own serial numbers beginning with S200000. On September 28, 1937, Remington stopped the separate serial number sequence for the 16-gauge "Sportsman" at 216364, and from then on the 16-gauge "Sportsman" was numbered right along with the 16-gauge Model 11.

Similar things happened for the 12- and 20-gauge "Sportsman".
