Rifle Stock Care

Post by 27Northtexan19 »

Can anyone tell me the best way to care for wooden rifle stocks on antique rifles? I would like to clean and then treat but not to the extent of sanding, etc.

Just leave it alone you are asking for trouble you will regret later.
You wish would not have done.

Great question! I have been wondering that myself. My Roller is an oldie, and I'm certainly not going to sand the stock, but I did use some gun cleaner to reveal two stamping on the butt stock I had not noticed before, thereby lightning that area. At one time, I saw a YouTube video of Larry Potterfield of Midway using lacquer thinner to clean the wood, prior to reoiling.
What's the thoughts on that practice?
